- For the Handgun in Chop Till You Drop, see Handgun (Silver Ghost).
The Handgun is a firearm in Dead Rising.
The Handgun is the second firearm Frank West gets in the game (if he grabbed Brian Reynolds' Shotgun when the mall is first overrun). It doesn't have much stopping power and has 30 shots. It is useful for taking out single zombies or early bosses. It is a firearm designed to be able to be operated with one hand, though in-game, it is mostly used with both hands.
A majority of the police zombies carry guns, which they drop if attacked. It is not necessary to kill them; you only have to hit them or bump into them. In the Deluxe Remaster, Police Zombies will fire their guns haphazardly, and will hurt Frank if he is close enough.
A headshot will instantly kill any zombie.
Attacks[]
- Primary: Tap the
button to fire the Handgun. If Frank is moving, he will fire in front of him; if he is remaining still, he will automatically aim at the nearest target. - Aim: Hold down the
trigger to go into aim mode then press the
button to fire the Handgun at a specific target.
Trivia[]
- In both 72 Hour Mode and ∞ Mode, the handgun is the most frequently used weapon among all the characters, used by a total of 10 characters in the former (or 12, if Ross Folk and Simone Ravendark are to be given handguns), and 7 characters in the latter.
- The handgun is used by at least one character in each conceivable way. It is used by the majority of characters as a ranged weapon, by officer zombies as melee weapons, and by the armed woman as a throwable weapon.
- Be careful when giving this weapon to the survivors in your party. If they are surrounded, a small cutscene will play, showing them panicking, and committing suicide by shooting themselves in the head. Brainwashing Tips will negate this affect.
- Alyssa Laurent is the exception to this, as even without Brainwashing Tips, she can handle getting surrounded and will simply try to shoot her way out of it. Despite being used by several storyline characters and Psychopaths, she's the only survivor to naturally spawn with one.
- Don't give this weapon to Ross when he asks for one. If Frank does, he will shoot himself, causing Tonya Waters to defect and become unrecruitable.
- The handgun is a Colt M1911A1 in gameplay, but a SIG Sauer P228 in cutscenes. Carlito's handgun resembles the Five-Seven handgun.
- *SPOILER ALERT* In the Deluxe Remaster, after collecting the bombs in the 'Bomb Collector" case, one can go right back to the maintenance tunnels to find a hurt and dying Brad. In the cutscene, Brad will nudge his handgun towards Frank, silently telling him to end him. When Frank picks up the handgun, it only has one, singular bullet left. It's the only "special" handgun which can be obtained because the handgun doesn't flash to indicate that it's nearly about to break.
